A solitary multinucleated osteoclast is immunostained for the transcription factor microphthalmia (Mi). This protein, which localizes to the nucleus, is essential for normal osteoclast development. Rats harboring a deletion in Mi display severe osteopetrosis that improves with age. See related article in this issue by Weilbaecher et al., pp. 775–785.
