Publication Fees and Access Options

Our simple publication fees and choices ensure that Rockefeller University Press is able to offer a home to all manuscripts that meet the criteria of novelty, significance, and scientific rigor. 

Journal of Cell Biology (JCB) and Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM)

Authors who publish in JCB and JEM may select:

gold unlocked lock image Open Access under a CC-BY license for a fee of $6,000, also known as "gold" immediate open access. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) for immediate release, archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico, promotion to the scientific community, and syndication to ResearchGate in a pilot project providing immediate access to ResearchGate users. Some funders and institutions pay this fee - see No-cost Open Access for Authors.

OR

Open Access 6 months after publication under a CC-BY-NC-SA license for a fee of $2,000. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) under a 6 month embargo, archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico, promotion to the scientific community, and syndication to ResearchGate in a pilot project providing immediate access to ResearchGate users affiliated with an institutional subscription to the journal and access to all ResearchGate users 6 months after publication. RUP authors retain copyright and may self-archive in a freely accessible institutional or funder repository.

Journal of General Physiology (JGP

Authors who publish in JGP may select:

gold unlocked lock image Open Access under a CC-BY license for a fee of $2,000, also known as "gold" immediate open access. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) for immediate release, archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico, promotion to the scientific community, and syndication to ResearchGate in a pilot project providing immediate access to ResearchGate users. Some funders and institutions pay this fee – see No-cost Open Access for Authors.

OR

Open Access 6 months after publication under a CC-BY-NC-SA license for no fee. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) under a 6 month embargo, archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico, promotion to the scientific community, and syndication to ResearchGate in a pilot project providing immediate access to ResearchGate users affiliated with an institutional subscription to the journal and access to all ResearchGate users 6 months after publication. RUP authors retain copyright and may self-archive in a freely accessible institutional or funder repository.

These fees apply for manuscripts submitted to JGP on or after January 1, 2023.

Life Science Alliance (LSA)

gold unlocked lock image $3,750 Open Access under a CC-BY license. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) and, archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico. Articles are released on PMC upon issue publication. Learn more here.

No-cost Open Access for Authors

Corresponding authors publishing in JCB, JEM, and JGP at institutions in Read-and-Publish agreements: Your institution may participate in an agreement that allows for unlimited publishing with no author fees. We have Read-and-Publish agreements in place with IReL in the Republic of Ireland, with Jisc in the United Kingdom, with Max Planck in Germany, and with VIVA in the United States, and with individual libraries who are participating. Please check our Read-and-Publish portal to see if you can publish an unlimited number of articles with no author fees through your institution's library.

Corresponding authors publishing in JCB, JEM, JGP, and LSA from lower- and middle-income countries: To address equity in Open Access publishing and promote important global research, publication fees for Open Access under CC-BY license in JCB, JEM, and JGP are automatically waived for authors from lower- and middle-income countries identified by the Research4Life organizations HINARI, AGORA, and OARE. Primary corresponding authors based in eligible countries may now publish Open Access under a CC-BY license without publication fees. All Authors funded by members of cOAlition S: JCB, JEM, and JGP have secured Transformative Journal status from cOAlition S. Your institution or funder may cover your gold Open Access fees through December 31, 2024. While some cOAlition S funders will cover the gold Open Access fee, none will cover the option for Open Access 6 months after publication.

RUP authors retain copyright and may self-archive in a freely accessible institutional or funder repository in compliance with cOAlition S Rights Retention Strategy.

cOAlition S provides the Journal Checker Tool (JCT) beta to guide authors on compliance with their funder's Plan S-aligned Open Access policy as per the Implementation Roadmap of cOAlition S Organizations.
