Publication Fees and Access Options

Our simple publication fees and choices ensure that Rockefeller University Press is able to offer a home to all manuscripts that meet the criteria of novelty, significance, and scientific rigor. 

Authors who publish in Journal of Cell Biology (JCB), Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM), and Journal of General Physiology (JGP) may select:

green unlocked lock image $2,000 Perpetual open access 6 months after publication under a CC-BY-NC-SA license. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) and archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico.

or

gold unlocked lock image $5,300 Immediate Open Access under a CC-BY license. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) and archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico.

Inability to pay will not affect the publication of your manuscript. If you are experiencing financial hardship or complications with requirements by your funder, please contact us for more information at RUPFinance@rockefeller.edu or (212) 327-7938.

JCB, JEM, and JGP have secured Transformative Journal status from cOAlition S. Your institution or funder may cover your $5,300 Immediate Open Access fees through December 31, 2024. cOAlition S organizations include:

Corresponding authors at UK-based institutions: Please check with your librarian to see if your fees are covered under RUP's Jisc agreement. Articles with primary corresponding authors at participating institutions will be published as Immediate Open Access with no fees to the authors. 

Primary corresponding authors at Max Planck Institutes: Your fees are covered under RUP's "read-and-publish" transformative agreement with Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL). Research articles with primary corresponding authors at participating institutions will be published as Immediate Open Access with no fees to the authors. 

Primary corresponding authors based in the Commonwealth of Virginia: If your institution is an eligible member of VIVA, the consortium of non-profit academic libraries, your fees are covered under a Read-and-Publish transformative agreement between VIVA and RUP. Research articles with primary corresponding authors at eligible institutions will be published as Immediate Open Access with no fees to the authors. VIVA member institutions include six doctoral institutions, nine 4-year comprehensive colleges and universities, 24 community and 2-year branch colleges (at 40 campuses), 31 independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities, and other educational and research institutions.

Developing countries: To address equity in Open Access publishing and promote important global research, publication fees for Immediate OA under CC-BY license in JCB, JEM, and JGP are automatically waived for authors from developing countries identified by the Research4Life organizations HINARI, AGORA, and OARE. Primary corresponding authors based in eligible countries may now publish Immediate Open Access under a CC-BY license without publication fees. This includes deposit in PubMed Central (PMC) and archive in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS and Portico. View the full list of eligible developing countries here.

Publishing discount for Society of General Physiologists members: The Society of General Physiologists and JGP have a pilot partnership offering a 25% discount on the $2,000 JGP publications fee to all SGP members—a savings of $500. To enable the discount, active members can use a promotional code during invoicing. To receive a promotional code, members must contact SGP.
