Cover picture: This figure illustrates the dynamics of mitochondrial morphology in intact Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. The top panels show mitochondria in wild-type cells and mitochondrial fragmentation that occurs after treatment with sodium azide (right). The bottom panels demonstrate the extended, fenestrated, mitochondrial morphology in gag3 mutant cells and the absence of mitochondrial fragmentation in these cells after sodium azide treatment. The latter cells are defective in a key mitochondrial fission component, Gag3p. Mitochondria were labeled with the green fluorescent protein (GFP) and visualized by fluorescence microscopy.
