Cells regulate their size according to nutrient conditions. Here, Chadha et al. use live-cell imaging and machine learning–assisted image analysis to follow budding yeast cell lineages as they adapt their size in response to a nutrient shift. They show that size regulators that seem redundant in steady state can have specific roles for cell size adaptation.
