Scientific Editor/Senior Scientific Editor,
Journal of  Experimental Medicine

The Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM) seeks a talented individual for the role of Scientific Editor or Senior Scientific Editor, dependent on experience.

JEM is a multidisciplinary journal, published by not-for-profit academic publisher Rockefeller University Press (RUP), and dedicated to publishing high quality research in experimental medicine and disease pathogenesis.

JEM Scientific Editors: 

  • Report to the Executive Editor and oversee the peer-review process for submitted research papers.
  • Assess submitted research papers for scope, originality, rigor, context, and implications, and provide editorial recommendations.
  • Collaborate with other editors on the JEM team and experts on JEM's academic editorial board on all aspects of editorial process, including manuscript selection and peer-review.
  • Represent JEM at national and international scientific conferences and research institutions.
  • Recruit high quality content for publication in JEM.
  • Establish relationships with researchers through outreach to the respective scientific communities and by providing excellent author service.
  • Commission reviews and other front matter content for JEM.
  • Work closely with colleagues across RUP on press-wide initiatives.


Senior Scientific Editors at JEM carry these responsibilities and:  

  • Promote journal policies.
  • Support Executive Editor in training Scientific Editors.
  • Effectively manage projects that contribute toward JEM's strategic direction and vision.


We are looking for: 

  • Passion for science and eagerness to learn about new areas of research.
  • Strong interest in scientific publishing and publication ethics.
  • Critical thinking skills and superb attention to detail.

  • Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related field.
  • A deep understanding of the field, and eagerness to stay current with new trends and developments.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, networking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel to conferences and visit research institutions.
  • Ability to work successfully both independently and in a diverse global team.

  • Previous editorial experience is not required, but desirable for Scientific Editor position.
  • 2+ years of editorial experience is required; 3+ is preferred to be considered for the senior role.
