Journal of Experimental Medicine welcomes Executive Editor Natalie Cain, PhD

Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM) is pleased to introduce Natalie Cain as the Executive Editor of the journal. Cain will guide the collaborative editorial process at JEM, in which all editorial decisions on research manuscripts are made through consultations between professional scientific editors and the academic editorial board.

“Authors value confident, thoughtful, and fair editorial processes, and JEM’s collaborative model is particularly suited to provide this,” Cain says. “When authors submit their work to JEM, they can rest assured that decisions are made based on the quality of the science and how it advances our understanding of the field. Their work will be in good hands. I’m excited to bring my extensive experience in the editorial process to this accomplished editorial team.”

Cain joins JEM from Cell Press, where she was most recently Deputy Editor at Cell Reports. There she supervised the review and publication of papers across a broad range of topics, including neuroscience, cancer, immunology, metabolism, and genomics. She also co-led the STAR Methods initiative for structured and transparent methods reporting from 2019 to 2023. During that time, Cell Press implemented new guidelines on data and code availability and reporting of sex- and gender-based analyses, among other developments.

“Natalie brings a sharp editorial eye honed over 8 years of handling thousands of manuscripts,’  says RUP Executive Director Susan King. “Natalie’s scientific training, her commitment to scientific rigor and author service, and depth of experience in editorial leadership make her uniquely suited to lead JEM, and a valued new member of the leadership team at RUP. “

Cain has a PhD in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and performed postdoctoral research at the University of California, Davis, where she studied the structure and function of nuclear envelope proteins involved in nuclear positioning. During her time at the bench, Cain published a paper in RUP’s Journal of Cell Biology,The SUN protein UNC-84 is required only in force-bearing cells to maintain nuclear envelope architecture.”
