PUBLISH YOUR RESEARCH IN JCB

Journal of Cell Biology publishes advances in many areas of basic cell biology, as well as applied cellular advances in fields such as immunology, neurobiology, metabolism, microbiology, developmental biology, and plant biology. Since JCB was established in 1955, the discipline of cell biology emerged and developed on its pages, including the first descriptions of numerous cellular functions and structures. Today it publishes new science that shapes the current conversations in the cell biology community and presents pathways for exploration. JCB is published by Rockefeller University Press, a department of The Rockefeller University in New York City, and reflects the university’s commitment to high-quality science for the benefit of humanity.

nullCommunity Focused

JCB is a nonprofit journal by and for scientists, with editorial decisions determined by active researchers not commercial interests, strengthened by collaboration between professional and academic editors. Learn more about our editors and see the full Editorial Board here.

nullFormat Neutral and Preprint Friendly

Authors can submit their papers in ANY format, and prior posting to a preprint server won’t affect consideration.

nullTransfers Welcome

We welcome submissions that include reviewer comments from another journal and offer rapid decisions on transferred manuscripts.

nullFair and Fast

We limit rounds of revision, and we strive to provide clear, detailed decisions that illustrate what is expected in the revisions. In 2024, 99% of invited revisions were accepted and 28% of revisions were accepted without re-review.

nullOpen Access Available

Authors can choose Gold OA to make their articles immediately publicly available or Green OA to make them accessible to readers with a subscription and then publicly available 12 months after publication. Authors always retain copyright if allowed by their institution/funder. You may self-deposit your accepted manuscript to a funder repository (e.g., PubMed Central) or an institutional repository in accordance with your funder/institutional policy.

How it Works:

null1. Submission

null2. Assessment by scientific and academic editors (SEs and AEs), and if appropriate, sent to external reviewers.

null3. Reviewers comment and examine one another’s anonymous comments.

null4. SEs and AEs assess reviewers’ comments.

null5. Informed decisions sent to authors.

null6. If invited, authors submit revised manuscript.

null7. Assessment by SEs and AEs, and if appropriate, sent to external reviewers.

null8. Reviewers comment and examine one another’s anonymous comments.

null9. SEs and AEs assess reviewers’ comments.

null10. If accepted, manuscript moves to production for copyediting, formatting, tagging for discovery, and checks for compliance.

null11. Once approved, manuscript is published and promoted to the scientific community.

Journal Metrics

JCB and Rockefeller University Press journals are signatories of the DORA declaration, and we use several metrics that provide an overview of journal performance. Readers can find Altmetric data and usage statistics within each article.

  • Journal Impact Factor (JIF)Journal Impact Factor: The average number of citations in a given year per paper published in the journal over the previous 2 years. Different subject areas exhibit different ranges of JIF. Journals are best viewed in the context of their specific field.
    : 6.4
  • 5-Year IF5-Year IF: Offers a smoother variation and may be more appropriate in a field where the number of citations is small or where it takes longer than 2 years to disseminate and respond to published works.
    : 7.2
  • JIF rank Cell Biology journalsRank by Journal Impact Factor: Journals within a category are sorted in descending order by Journal Impact Factor (JIF) resulting in the Category Ranking. A separate rank is shown for each category in which the journal is listed in JCR. Beginning in 2023, ranks are calculated by category.
    : 48
    • JIF Quartile: Q1
  • Cited Half-LifeCited Half-life: A measure of how long content is referred to after publication. The number of years, going back from the current year, that account for half the total citations received by the journal in the current year.
    : 16.2
  • Eigenfactor (EF) ScoreEigenfactor: A measure of the journal’s influence within the network of academic citations with a 5- year target window based on Thomson ISI data. Considers the origins of the incoming journal citations to articles in that journal. Citations from highly ranked journals are weighted to make a larger contribution to the Eigenfactor score.
    : 0.0298
  • Article Influence (AI) ScoreArticle Influence: As for the Eigenfactor score, measures influence but on an average per-article basis. The mean Article Influence score is 1.00. A score greater than 1.00 indicates that the articles in a journal have an above average influence.
    : 3.17
  • Scimago Journal and Country Rank (SJR)SJR: As for the Eigenfactor score, ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. Based on the SCOPUS database.
    : 3.359
  • Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP)SNIP: Measures a source’s contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. It helps you make a direct comparison of sources in different subject fields.
    : 1.522
  • Immediacy IndexImmediacy Index: The average number of times that an article is cited in the same year it is published.
    : 1.3
  • Subject Categories Ranking,
Journal Citation Indicator (JCI)JCI: A category-normalized metric calculated for all journals in the Web of Science Core Collection, including the Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, and Emerging Sources Citation Index.
