Journal of Cell Biology publishes advances in many areas of basic cell biology, as well as applied cellular advances in fields such as immunology, neurobiology, metabolism, microbiology, developmental biology, and plant biology. Since JCB was established in 1955, the discipline of cell biology emerged and developed on its pages, including the first descriptions of numerous cellular functions and structures. Today it publishes new science that shapes the current conversations in the cell biology community and presents pathways for exploration. JCB is published by Rockefeller University Press, a department of The Rockefeller University in New York City, and reflects the university’s commitment to high-quality science for the benefit of humanity.

Format Neutral and Preprint Friendly
Authors can submit their papers in ANY format, and prior posting to a preprint server won’t affect consideration.
Transfers Welcome
We welcome submissions that include reviewer comments from another journal and offer rapid decisions on transferred manuscripts.
Fair and Fast
We limit rounds of revision, and we strive to provide clear, detailed decisions that illustrate what is expected in the revisions. In 2024, 99% of invited revisions were accepted and 28% of revisions were accepted without re-review.
Open Access Available
Authors can choose Gold OA to make their articles immediately publicly available or Green OA to make them accessible to readers with a subscription and then publicly available 12 months after publication. Authors always retain copyright if allowed by their institution/funder. You may self-deposit your accepted manuscript to a funder repository (e.g., PubMed Central) or an institutional repository in accordance with your funder/institutional policy.
How it Works:
1. Submission
2. Assessment by scientific and academic editors (SEs and AEs), and if appropriate, sent to external reviewers.
3. Reviewers comment and examine one another’s anonymous comments.
4. SEs and AEs assess reviewers’ comments.
5. Informed decisions sent to authors.
6. If invited, authors submit revised manuscript.
7. Assessment by SEs and AEs, and if appropriate, sent to external reviewers.
8. Reviewers comment and examine one another’s anonymous comments.
9. SEs and AEs assess reviewers’ comments.
10. If accepted, manuscript moves to production for copyediting, formatting, tagging for discovery, and checks for compliance.
11. Once approved, manuscript is published and promoted to the scientific community.
