During the production of this review, an error was introduced to the third sentence of the second paragraph: the second occurrence of “of serine” was mistakenly inserted and does not refer to the degradation and/or decrease in expression of IRS. The corrected sentence appears below.

A primary mechanism that has surfaced from these studies is the inhibition of IRS protein function through the phosphorylation of serine residues, degradation, and/or decrease in expression that disconnect the insulin receptor from PI3K–Akt activation (for reviews see Saltiel and Kahn, 2001; White, 2002).
