Journal of General Physiology publishes high-quality research that reveals the mechanistic and quantitative underpinnings of molecular and cellular physiology. Areas of focus include membrane proteins, signaling, biophysics, and contractile systems. Authors can submit their papers in ANY format, and prior posting to a preprint server won’t affect consideration.
Fast and Fair
Initial decisions are provided in 2 days. We limit rounds of revision, and we strive to provide clear, detailed decisions that illustrate what is expected in the revisions. In 2024, 98% of invited revisions were accepted.
Transfers Welcome
We welcome submissions that include reviewer comments from another journal and offer rapid decisions on transferred manuscripts.
Open Access Available
Authors can choose Gold OA to make their articles immediately publicly available or Green OA to make them accessible to readers with a subscription and then publicly available 12 months after publication. Authors always retain copyright if allowed by their institution/funder. You may self-deposit your accepted manuscript to a funder repository (e.g., PubMed Central) or an institutional repository in accordance with your funder/institutional policy.
No Fee or Low Fee
Authors can publish Green OA free of charge or pay a single article charge of $2,000 to make their articles Gold OA.

How it Works:
1. Submission
2. Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editors evaluate for peer review.
3. Peer Reviewer.
4. Editors evaluate reports.
5. Informative decision letters convey editors’ expectations.
6.Revised manuscripts evaluated by editors.
7.If criteria met, paper is accepted.
8. Manuscript moves to production for copyediting, formatting, tagging for discovery, and checks for compliance.
9. Once approved, manuscript is published and promoted to the scientific community.
