Read-and-Publish Agreement between Max Planck Society (MPS) and RUP Journals

The Max Planck Society (MPS) unlimited Read-and-Publish transformative agreement with Rockefeller University Press (RUP) covers RUP’s three hybrid journals: Journal of Cell Biology (JCB), Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM), and Journal of General Physiology (JGP), in addition to the fully Open Access titles: Journal of Human Immunity (JHI)—co-published with IAPIDS, and Life Science Alliance (LSA)—co-published with EMBO Press and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. The agreement runs from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.

How the 86 Max Planck Institutes immediately benefit from the agreement:

  • Read: Unlimited access to all content published in JCB, JEM, and JGP immediately after publication. LSA and JHI are Open Access: all content is immediately available upon publication.
  • Publish: 100% coverage of the Immediate Open Access fees on any accepted manuscript when the primary corresponding author is based at a Max Planck Institute. There is no limit to the number of articles that may be published as a part of the deal.

Central OA Billing

  • Hybrid Titles: Authors at eligible Max Planck Institutes may publish unlimited research articles in RUP’s three hybrid titles Journal of Cell Biology (JCB), Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM), and Journal of General Physiology (JGP) at no additional cost.
  • Open Access Titles: Authors at eligible Max Planck institutions may publish unlimited articles in our fully Open Access titles Life Science Alliance (LSA) and Journal of Human Immunity (JHI). Upon acceptance, MPS will be invoiced for the article's APC.

Open Access research articles are published under a CC-BY license, directly deposited to PubMed Central (PMC) and subsequently to Europe PMC, and archived in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS.

How authors can take advantage of the agreement:

  • The primary corresponding author must be affiliated with a Max Planck Institute, and the author must publish under this affiliation.
  • Upon submitting their article, the author should use their Max Planck email address if possible. The author will be asked to validate their institution if a validated institution is not already linked to the author’s user profile. The Max Planck Institute must be indicated.
  • The article must be accepted between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2028.
  • If invited to submit a final revision, the author will receive a request to sign our license to publish once the revision is accepted.
  • Authors who publish in RUP journals always retain copyright ownership or the ability to set the copyright owner as their institution when required.
