The free energy landscape for the two models of water permeability considered in this paper is shown in black. For the chemical kinetics model there are four states. States 1 and 4 are at the bulk water boundaries and states 2 and 3 are at the hydrocarbon core boundaries. For the Nernst-Planck model the position x along the perpendicular to the bilayer is a continuous variable.
