Direct recording of currents in cilia using patch clamp methods. A gigaohm seal with a patch pipette onto the ciliary membrane enables measurement of single channel activity. Alternatively, “breaking into” the cilia allows for recordings of whole ciliary currents, even when cilia are then completely detached from the cell.
