RUP response to COVID-19 crisis

Rockefeller University Press stands with the scientific community as we collectively confront the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Journal of Cell Biology (JCB), Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM), and Journal of General Physiology (JGP) have taken proactive measures to assist researchers during this challenging time.

COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2 content

RUP is a signatory to the Wellcome statement that commits JCB, JEM, and JGP to:

• make peer-reviewed research articles relevant to the outbreak freely available
• immediately share relevant research findings with the WHO with author knowledge upon journal submission
• recommend authors post relevant research findings to preprint servers, and share final published data as rapidly and widely as possible
• make coronavirus-related publications and the available data supporting them immediately accessible in PubMed Central (PMC). (RUP deposits all articles in PubMed Central (PMC) and archives in LOCKSS/CLOCKSS on behalf of authors.)

Access to all RUP journals content

RUP journals provide authors the choice to select for their research articles Open Access or open access 6 months after publication, during which time they are available to readers at subscribing institutions.

At all times we offer the following remote access capabilities to subscribed content. 

VPN access

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is software provided to users by their institutions. Users run VPN on their computers, mobile devices or in a standard Web browser to connect securely to their institution’s network from over the Internet. While VPN is enabled, users are on their institution’s network IP address, which allows access to third party resources such as journals and databases. Users with VPN enabled from subscribing institutions should notice no interruption in access to RUP content. Contact your information technology department or librarian for more information.

Affiliated user access

If a user has a free individual user account for one of our journals and is logged on to that account while accessing our content on their institution’s network (on site or via VPN), the individual account is automatically associated with the institution’s access rights. Once associated, when off network and signed with the personal account, access will be granted to all subscribed content. Affiliated access will persist for 90 days after the last visit to the journal while on the institution's network.

An individual can sign in or create a free account via the “Sign In” link at the top right corner of any page on RUP journal websites.

Universal CASA

RUP journals support Universal CASA (Campus Activated Subscriber Access). Like affiliated user access, Universal CASA is initiated while on a subscribing institution’s network but the processes take place in the background by Google. Universal CASA is triggered when directly accessing journal content on the subscribing institution's network. There is no need to be logged into a Google account at the time of network access, but if a user is, rights are also associated with the Google account and that account can be used to access subscribed content across devices, even if they have not been on the institution's network.

Countrywide access

RUP is proud to participate in the Research4Life initiative that provides developing countries with free access to peer-reviewed content through programs including Hinari: Research for Health, established by the World Health Organization. Additionally, RUP goes a step further and makes all content in our journals freely available via country-wide IP addresses to the countries listed here.

Shibboleth

Subscription administrators can set-up Shibboleth federated access via the “Access Options” section of their admin page. More information can be found here. If your federation does not appear in the dropdown menu, please contact us at [email protected].

OpenAthens

OpenAthens is now available for RUP journals. OpenAthens establishes one set of log-in credentials for all web resources and applications. CARSI

CERNET Authentication and Resource Sharing Infrastructure (CARSI) is the Identity Federation and resource sharing service of CERNET—China Education and Research Network. CARSI is introduced to facilitate and simplify the process of shared services among the Federation members in CERNET. It is a multi-organization association effected by using Identity Federation Technologies to extend the scope of a digital identity issued by one Federation Member to be valid across the whole Federation to promote the user identity resources and application resources sharing among members.
