New editorial appointments include Lingle, Mindell, Andersen, Eltit, French, and Vásquez

Journal of General Physiology (JGP) Editor-in-Chief David Eisner has appointed Christopher J. Lingle and Joseph A. Mindell to Associate Editor positions. Olaf S. Andersen has been named Consulting Editor, and  Jose M. Eltit, Robert J. French, and Valeria Vásquez have joined the JGP Editorial Advisory Board.

“Given their history of service to the journal, dedication to their labs and scientific community, Chris and Joseph are a natural fit as JGP Associate Editors,” Eisner says. “Olaf’s continued service and institutional knowledge are tremendous assets to JGP. The additions of Jose, Robert, and Valeria to the EAB further strengthen JGP’s representation of the research community, and we are absolutely delighted to have them with us.”

A longtime JGP Editorial Advisory Board Member and Guest Editor, Lingle is professor of anesthesiology and of neurobiology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where he focuses on allosteric regulation of calcium and voltage regulated channels; mechanisms of channel block; mechanisms of channel regulation by auxiliary subunits and the physiological roles of channels in native cells.

“My appreciation of JGP began with their willingness to publish some of my postdoctoral work,” Lingle says. “Subsequently, I came to appreciate two unique aspects of the journal. The first is that JGP allows, and to some extent requires, one to fully develop the rationale behind experiments, results, and conclusions. The second is that JGP editors and reviewers do an outstanding job to help authors improve their papers if they feel there is something worthwhile in a piece of work. I agreed to becoming an editor because I felt a responsibility to contribute to maintaining these special aspects of JGP while the journal continues to grow its community.”

Also a longtime JGP Editorial Advisory Board Member and Guest Editor, Mindell is Senior Investigator at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at NIH, where he has a deep interest in biological membranes; structure/function of secondary active transporters; and organellar ion dynamics.

“JGP has always been an important part of my scientific reading,” Mindell says. “From graduate school onward, it has been a source of the most rigorous and thoughtful biophysical work. More recently, as an Editorial Advisory Board member I’ve seen the thought and care that goes into the review and publication of each paper and have enjoyed actively recruiting papers from the transporter community to the journal. I am honored to become an Associate Editor, where I will have the opportunity to continue the journal’s commitment to its traditional community as well as to help expand our authorship and audience to new areas. The journal’s efforts, spearheaded by Sharona Gordon, the previous editor-in-chief, to expand mentorship and outreach have been extremely valuable and I look forward to continuing to build on these under David’s editorship.”

Andersen is the Professor of Physiology and Biophysics and Director of the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program. His service to JGP stretches back to 1982 when joined the Editorial Advisory Board. He was appointed Associate Editor in 1984 and served as Editor-in-Chief 1995–2008, after which he managed Perspectives articles and became Perspectives Editor in 2010, serving in that capacity until his recent appointment as Consulting Editor.

In keeping with the mission of JGP, the new members of the Editorial Advisory Board are all active scientists. Eltit is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Virginia Commonwealth University. French is Professor in the Department of Physiology & Pharmacology at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, as well as the 2019 Mentor of the JGP Junior Faculty Networking Cohort. Valeria Vasquez is Assistant Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
