Neurological and psychiatric disorders result from the disruption of a range of different cellular processes, including cell-cell communication, intracellular signaling and cellular homeostasis. At the heart of these processes is a cell membrane and a vast array of membrane proteins that together regulate the distribution of solutes and small molecules between the inside and outside of each cell. When membrane physiology is disturbed, disease can ensue. Equally, the lipids and proteins that govern membrane physiology also represent potential targets for therapy. The articles in this collection explore some of these pathophysiological mechanisms and reveal hope for developing new treatments for these diseases.
