Electrical Signaling in the Nervous System and Heart
A collection exploring the diverse molecular mechanisms that underlie electrical signaling in the nervous system and heart. Also highlighted are the multidisciplinary approaches that are being used to dissect the structure-function relationships of the underlying transport proteins.
The passage of ions across cell membranes constitutes the ionic basis of electrical signaling in neuronal and cardiac tissue. The channels and transporters that carry these ions are manifold, and each are subject to intrinsic and extrinsic regulation, thus the orchestration of excitability is a complex process.
