Rebecca Alvania, Director of Editorial Development, RUP; and Executive Editor, JCB
Rebecca Alvania is a science writer and neuroscientist by training. Her research experience is in molecular and cellular mechanisms of neural development, with graduate training at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and post-doctoral training at the University of Virginia. She also received a master’s degree in science writing from The Johns Hopkins University. Alvania was a science writer with the U.S. National Academies Office of Media Relations before joining Cell Press as the Editor of Trends in Cell Biology. She remained at Cell Press and moved into new roles as Editorial Project Manager for Reviews Strategy and Scientific Editor at Neuron. She is currently the Executive Editor of The Journal of Cell Biology, and the Director of Editorial Development for The Rockefeller University Press.
Thiago Carvalho, Senior Scientific Editor, JEM
Thiago received his PhD from Porto University working in the laboratory of Jocelyne Demengeot at the Gulbenkian Institute of Science, studying regulatory T cells. After a postdoc on marginal zone B cells with John Kearney at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Thiago returned to the Gulbenkian, where he was Head of Graduate Studies. He joined The Journal of Experimental Medicine as a Scientific Editor in 2015.
Melina Casadio, Senior Scientific Editor, JCB
Melina received her PhD in genetics in 2012 based on work conducted with Dr. Jean-Laurent Casanova at The Rockefeller University in New York. After a short postdoc with Dr. Viviane Tabar at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, Melina joined The Rockefeller University Press in 2014 as Associate Scientific Editor for The Journal of Cell Biology and was promoted to Senior Scientific Editor in 2016.
Brianna Caszatt, Senior Production Editor, JEM and JGP
Brianna has been at The Rockefeller University Press since 2008, working her way up from Copy Editor for The Journal of Cell Biology to Senior Production Editor for The Journal of Experimental Medicine and The Journal of General Physiology.
Alejo Chorny, Senior Scientific Editor, JEM
Alejo completed his PhD in cellular and molecular immunology at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas in Granada, Spain. After postdoctoral work at the Icahn School of Medicine Mount Sinai with Andrea Cerutti studying marginal zone and mucosal B cell responses, he joined The Journal of Experimental Medicine as a Scientific Editor in 2015.
Camille Clowery, Production Manager
Camille started at The Rockefeller University Press in 2005 as a Copy Editor on The Journal of Cell Biology, became JCB Assistant Production Editor in 2007, Copy Editing Coordinator in 2008, and was promoted to Production Manager in 2014. She enjoys grammar discussions, long lunches, and happy hour.

Sylvia has worked at The Rockefeller University Press since 2005. She loves TV and happy hour.
Raymond Fastiggi, Finance Director
Ray holds a BA from Lehigh University and an MBA from Iona College. He began working at The Rockefeller University Press in 1975 as a Production Editor and transferred to the Finance Department in 1979. He is responsible for all financial matters for the three Press journals. Ray is a charter member of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), where he served as secretary/treasurer for nine years. Ray was the SSP president for the 2009–2010 year.

Libby has a BA in creative writing, marketing, and publishing from NYU Gallatin. She came to The Rockefeller University Press after interning at Macmillan and Scholastic publishers. She enjoys running, writing, and following grand slam tennis.
Erinn A. Grady, Production Designer
Erinn has been with The Rockefeller University Press since 1998, starting out as a Copy Editor for The Journal of Cell Biology. Prior to joining the Press, she spent many years working in academic (Boston University Science and Engineering Library), public (Boston Public Library), and law (O’Melveny & Myers, LLP) libraries. She studied psychology and biology at Boston University.

Susan King, Executive Director
Susan joined RUP as Executive Director in June 2015. She serves as chair of the Board of Directors of CHOR, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization, and its first initiative, CHORUS. Prior to RUP, Susan was Senior Vice President of the Journals Publishing Group at the American Chemical Society beginning in 2008, and she spent 15 years at John Wiley & Sons in various editorial and management roles. Susan received her PhD in immunology from the University of Glasgow.

Gregory Malar, Business Development Director
Greg began his career in scholarly publishing in 1991, working on a project to digitize L’Année philologique, the standard bibliography for research in classical antiquity. Greg joined The Rockefeller University Press in 1995 and was part of the team that brought the Press into the age of electronic publishing. He is active in several publishing organizations, including ALPSP and SSP. Greg’s industry service has often focused on information standards; he is a member of NISO I2 and the ICEDIS Committee, which he has co-chaired since 2002. Greg has a BA in classics from Franklin and Marshall College and an MBA from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

Andrea did her PhD with Peter McPherson at McGill University in Montreal studying the regulation of membrane trafficking by Rab GTPases. She then moved to the laboratory of Volker Haucke in Berlin, where she examined mechanisms controlling mTORC1 signaling. Andrea joined the Rockefeller University Press in 2016 as a Scientific Editor at The Journal of Cell Biology.
D. Aaron McIlhenny, Copy Editor
Aaron holds a BA from Kenyon College in creative writing and originally hails from San Francisco. Before starting at The Rockefeller University Press, he volunteered at Viva Editions and the San Francisco Public Library and is a graduate of the Columbia Publishing Course. He enjoys hiking, reading, skiing, and exploring New York City.

Marie Anne O'Donnell, Scientific Editor, JCB
Marie Anne received a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Glasgow for work on the modulation of the immune system by Epstein-Barr virus proteins. She then moved to Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and worked in the Immunology Institute as a postdoc and research faculty investigating the molecular regulation of cell death processes before joining The Rockefeller University Press as a scientific editor for JCB in 2015.
Rob O’Donnell, Director of Publishing Technologies
Rob's interests in editing and photography merged when he started as a Copy Editor at RUP, finding the opportunity to usher the Press into the digital age of imaging, editing, and publishing. Today, leading a single workflow for electronic and print production, Rob continues to play a major role in maintaining RUP’s status as an innovator. Rob has a BA in English/creative writing from NYU and continues to pursue his education in arts, technology, and beer.

Shauna graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in English. She started her career at The Rockefeller University Press as a Copy Editor at The Journal of Cell Biology. In 2007, she became Assistant Production Editor of the The Journal of Experimental Medicine.

Teodoro Pulvirenti, Executive Editor, JEM
Teodoro (Teo) received his PhD from the Mario Negri Sud Institute in Italy. He then carried out his postdoctoral work in the lab of Alan Hall at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, studying the role Wnt signaling in cancer stem cells, and continued this line of research in the lab of Eric Holland at the same institution. Teo started his editorial career at The Journal of Experimental Medicine (JEM) in 2013. He then joined Nature Cell Biology as Senior Editor and returned to JEM as Executive Editor in 2016.
Rochelle Ritacco, Preflight Editor
Rochelle is responsible for the preparation of figures for RUP publication—checking production quality, conforming style, and clarity of presentation. She is a skilled digital artist with expertise in many media applications. Rochelle began freelancing at RUP in 2007 and shortly thereafter joined the staff. Prior to RUP, she assisted the campus photographer at Monmouth University. Rochelle received her BA in communications from Seton Hill University and has completed two certificate programs, Digital Art (BCC) and Filmmaking (NYU). She is on the board of the Belmar Art Council. Rochelle lives along the dazzling north Jersey shore with her husband and daughter.
Meighan E. Schreiber, Managing Editor, JGP
Meighan has over a decade of experience with online peer review systems and running an editorial office through her service as a Managing Editor of Health Services Research, Health Research & Educational Trust's flagship publication and an official journal of AcademyHealth. Meighan was most recently the Managing Editor of Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. Meighan succeeds David W. Greene, who had been responsible for the JGP editorial office since January 1996 and retired June 2016.
Ben Short, Senior Science Writer
Ben did his PhD in cell biology with Francis Barr at the University of Glasgow, UK and the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried, Germany. He then spent four years as a postdoctoral fellow with Elaine Fuchs at The Rockefeller University in New York before joining RUP in 2008 as a Science Writer for The Journal of Cell Biology. In addition to his articles for the journal, he contributes to the Press’s audio and video podcasts.
Colleen Smith, Business Development Specialist
Colleen studied creative writing and journalism at The Johns Hopkins University, where she picked up a passion for science. She previously worked at The Rockefeller University Press (2000–2007) as Assistant Production Editor for The Journal of Cell Biology and Production Editor for The Journal of Experimental Medicine. She is also a licensed massage therapist and maintains a private practice in Brooklyn.
Laura Smith, Preflight Coordinator
Laura began her career at The Rockefeller University in 1996 in the Office of Public Affairs. In 1997, she joined The Rockefeller University Press as assistant to then director Michael Held. In 2003, under the guidance of Mike Rossner, Laura began image screening. She has since traveled abroad and throughout the United States training others in the detection of image manipulation. Laura lives in the Hudson Valley with her daughter, three cats, and her Rottweiler Chance.
Tim Spencer, Deputy Editor, JCB
Tim received his PhD from the City University of New York, where he studied the signaling mechanisms that underlie the promotion of axonal growth and regeneration following injury in the laboratory of Marie Filbin. He then moved to the laboratory of Chris Henderson at Columbia University, where he examined molecular markers of postnatal motor neuron maturation and elements of motor-specific disease. Tim served as a senior scientific editor at Nature Neuroscience since 2011 before moving to RUP to become the Deputy Editor of The Journal of Cell Biology in 2016.

Zhe Wang, Scientific Editor, JEM
Zhe received his B.S. at Zhejiang University in China and then earned his Ph.D. in the lab of Harm HogenEsch at Purdue University, examining the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. After postdoctoral work at MD Anderson Cancer Center with Patrick Hwu studying host response to cancer immunotherapy using a high-throughput shRNA screening approach, he joined The Journal of Experimental Medicine as a Scientific Editor in 2016.
Rory Williams, Director of Communications and Marketing
Rory joined The Rockefeller University Press in January 2016 from the American Thoracic Society, where he served as director of communications and marketing. There he led initiatives to market the ATS’s three scientific journals, annual International Conference, educational programs, and membership. Prior to the ATS, he was an associate editor at String Letter Publishing and worked for daily newspapers on the West Coast, including the Palo Alto Daily News. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Humboldt State University.
